The Gossip Girls

Okay, so don’t get me wrong, I love a good classic movie. Those movies that include love, friendships, & happy endings but I’ve noticed that these movies usually involve gossip. The gossip that grabs the attention of the audience & leads in marketing strategies for previews. Why is that? Why is it that we like the drama in movies but we oppose this behavior when it hits home & we’re apart of the casualties. If I can be candid, I hate gossip! I always think, that can be me on the other end of that conversation. The thought of watching Christians indulge in the hardships of others is disheartening. I know the title says “The Gossip Girls” but I’ve realized gossip has no respect for persons. It doesn’t care about gender, social rank, or economic status.

So today I'll share 3 reasons why gossip should not be tolerated.

1. Reputation

“Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say only what helps, each word a gift.”

Ephesians 4:29 MSG

Your reputation is fragile, with just one conversation it can curve the overall view of someone’s character. Not only is it fragile for the victim but the accuser also loses credibility. Many say “they don’t gossip, they speak the truth”. Well if your statement doesn't uplift others then the words you speak are no longer a gift but a curse.

2. Comparison

“Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.” Philippians 2:3 NLT

Gossiping implies that you are now better than someone because of their situation. You have now played the comparison game in a sense that brings into question insecurity. Humility is realizing that God’s protection has covered your bad days from the accuser & from open rebuke.

3. Bullying

"Words can bring death or life! Talk too much, and you will eat everything you say."

Proverbs 18:21 CEV

Our words have power & the conversations we hold effect those around us. Imagine if someone’s trials & hardships were due to what you said about them. Being able to place ourselves in someone else’s shoes is a form of compassion.

So today let us be mindful of the conversations we have & the influence we have on others. Hold those around you accountable for their words & challenge them in love.

Nook Note to the Christian:

Gossip brings entertainment & no one’s downfall should ever be your entertainment.
